Emmer & Rye - A Rainey Review

At the risk of sounding like a grumpy 86 year-old shut-in, I rarely venture to Rainey Street. I find the crowded sidewalks, congested traffic, open cigarette smoking, and drunken bar scene to be a bit much. I might enjoy a sausage at Banger’s from time to time, but it takes a lot to lure me from my creature comforts.

Brunch, however, is another story. Rainey’s bustling bars transform into a food-lover's dream on the weekends, and I’ve been quite impressed with how the bar scene shifts to a refined breakfast spot for the hungover and hungry alike.

I recently tried Emmer & Rye, and their approach was different from other Austin brunches. In addition to a set menu, the servers frequent the tables with two pastry carts, both filled with delicious sweet treats.

I gave their soft scrambled eggs a try, and they came with whole wheat sourdough toast, a hearty salsa and pickled peppers and pork belly. I also tried a jalapeno corn muffin, which was also divine. The Mimosa was pleasantly large, and the coffee was delightfully strong.

When the weather is pleasant, Emmer & Rye offers an excellent patio space to enjoy outdoor dining, and the menu is seasonal so you know you’re getting fresh and excitingly new dishes.

The décor in the space is impressive too; much more comfortable than I was expecting.

Two thumbs up.

P.S. Bon Appetit named Emmer & Rye one of the best new restaurants in the country!
